I started my first podcast in the New Year, so it was perfect timing to ask for podcasting equipment for Christmas. One thing I learned over the years is that podcasters tend to jump on bandwagons (I’ve done it myself) — one person recommends a piece of equipment and all of a sudden it becomes the “industry standard.” Not here!
I’ve put together this list of gift ideas for new and experienced podcasters alike. The podcast equipment packages are the same ones we recommend at our PodAbility™ workshops. These curated lists come from years of research and trial and error.
It’s important to note that we don’t sell these products and, at the time of this posting, have no affiliation with these brands. The prices were pulled from B&H Photo Video on 11/21/2016.
I would argue that the two most important pieces of equipment for any podcast producer is the microphone and the headphones. Without a great mic, you can’t have great sound. Without great headphones, you can’t properly edit your podcast. The podcaster needs to be able to hear everything that’s happening in their recording … the hisses, the bumps, the clicks, the garbage truck outside.
The problem with most headphones is they exaggerate tones to artificially make them sound better to the listener. Increased bass and treble may be great for listening to music, but they don’t give you an accurate representation of the actual recording while you’re editing.
These Audio-Technica headphones are a recent discovery for me. I found myself in need of a new set after making the mistake of setting my black Sony headphones in my black office chair … and then sitting on them the next day. Oops.
I love Audio-Technia microphones, so I decided to look into their headphone lineup. The ATH-M40x are touted as having flat sound. I know saying something sounds flat doesn’t seem like a good thing, but when it comes to studio headphones, it’s EVERYTHING! With these headphones you get a true feel for what you’ve actually recorded. Take a look (and listen) to this video to see why these headphones are the perfect holiday gift for podcasters.
This package is perfect for the person who’s just dipping their toe in podcasting. It features the great sounding Audio-Technica AT2005 microphone with a USB connection for ease of use with any computer and even some tablets and smartphones. It also has an XLR connection for future growth.
The Business Studio Package features the new BP40 studio microphone. This mic delivers the great sound you expect from a high-end studio mic with forgiving features that allow you to record in imperfect environments.
Planning to take your podcast on the road and conducting in-person interviews? This package is perfect for you. Featuring the AT8035 shotgun microphone that sounds amazing in-studio or on the road. This is hands down my favorite microphone.
